Our Top 5 Record Shops in Newtown

There’s nothing I love more than spending a lazy Sunday record shopping, be it at markets, second-hand stores, or op-shops. But nothing beats visiting a proper record store. Records line the walls, the legends of rock staring down at you as you sift through stacks and stacks of wax looking for that hidden gem.

Newtown is full of record shops, enough to keep you busy for days, so, in no particular order, here are our top 5 favourite record shops in Newtown.

HUM on King

Hum on King is a good place to start. Head here if you want the best new releases or fancy repressings of the classics. You could honestly spend hours getting lost in there. Not only with the records, but the shelves of DVDs and CDs as well.

Egg Records

Head up King Street a block or two, and throw a left onto Wilson Street. Here you’ll find Egg Records. This is where you go in Newtown if you want a good selection of second hand records. The store feels like it just keeps on going as you make your way down the stacks. And with vintage toys, and cabinets dedicated to the Beatles and Elvis, you’re guaranteed to find something a bit special.

Repressed Records

Repressed Records is a Sydney institution, even once visited by Elton John. It’s probably where I started my obsession with collecting vinyl records. Repressed speciality? The local stuff. Head here if you want the best that Sydney, and Australia, has to offer. They also have a solid second hand collection, as well as a wide range of second hand books. The staff know what they’re talking about too, so go in expecting to find something eclectic and new.

Something Else Records

Keep walking down King Street and you’ll eventually reach Something Else Records. This little hole in the wall specialises in all things electronic and electro. Find something you like? Why not buy some gear and kick start your DJ career while you’re there.

Cottonmouth

Top off your record hunting adventure with a visit to Cottonmouth just up Enmore Road. Beer. Whisky. Vinyl. That says it all. Flick through their incredible collection of records as you flick through their incredible selection of cocktails. It’s probably the best way to end your day, getting ready to hit the town.
